How Sony ToF Image Sensors Boost Farming Efficiency

3D Vision for Agriculture: Empowering Smart Farming with ToF Image Sensors

Modern agriculture is undergoing a data-driven transformation. To meet the needs of a growing global population and an evolving labor market, farms must adopt technologies that increase efficiency without compromising quality.

Sony Time of Flight (ToF) image sensors offer a powerful tool for this shift—combining robust 3D depth imaging with the speed and compactness required by field equipment.

How ToF Image Sensors Work?

In contrast to 2D imaging, ToF image sensors capture the third dimension by measuring the time light takes to reflect back from objects. This capability allows systems to inspect shapes and volumes, distinguish overlapped produce, and respond instantly to changing scenes.

Direct ToF (dToF)

dToF

Using SPAD pixels and time‑to‑digital converters, dToF captures precise timings of individual photons. It enables long‑distance detection and high ambient‑light tolerance, making it ideal for field‑scale sensing.

Indirect ToF (iToF)

iToF

iToF uses a CMOS structure to accumulate reflected light charge and detect phase shifts between emitted and reflected signals. It offers high image resolution and fast frame rates suitable for close‑to‑mid‑range sensing.

Why Do ToF Image Sensors Matter in Agriculture?

In agriculture, where variability in terrain, weather, and biological growth patterns are constant, this spatial awareness is critical. It allows harvesting machines and robots to:

  • Identify the exact position and ripeness of fruits
  • Adapt movement and grip strength in real time
  • Avoid damaging crops or nearby objects
  • Operate autonomously in dynamic outdoor environments

Supporting the Entire Harvesting Chain

Sony ToF sensors support every stage of the harvesting process by enabling robotic systems to perceive depth and make informed decisions in real time. For example, fruit‑picking robots equipped with ToF cameras can calculate the exact position and orientation of each piece of fruit, allowing a robotic gripper to adjust angle, approach velocity, and grip strength dynamically—minimizing crop damage and maximizing throughput.

They also facilitate automatic thinning systems that selectively remove excess fruit for better yield quality. On a larger scale, driverless agrimachines benefit from continuous 3D environmental monitoring, which allows precise navigation through crop fields, avoiding obstacles, and ensuring safe operation even under dense foliage or uneven terrain. Further downstream, harvested produce can be volume‑measured and sorted on conveyor systems using 3D morphology data captured by ToF image sensors, improving quality control, grading consistency, and operational efficiency.

Beyond harvesting, Sony ToF image sensors contribute to quality management and productivity enhancements in broader agricultural and livestock operations. They support automatic milking systems for dairy cows and enable advanced monitoring of livestock body shape, gait patterns, and remaining feed levels—helping farmers make data-driven decisions for animal health and resource optimization.

Optimized for Real-World Farming Applications

High frame rate and spatial resolution

Ideal for fast-moving operations such as robotic harvesting or automated livestock monitoring.

The IMX556PLR-C and IMX570PLR-C , both indirect ToF (iToF) image sensors, provide VGA resolution and high-speed depth acquisition, making them suitable for near- to mid-range applications in greenhouses, orchards, and livestock enclosures.

Strong ambient light tolerance for outdoor use

Essential for maintaining performance in bright sunlight or highly variable conditions.

The IMX560-AAMV is a direct ToF (dToF) image sensor based on SPAD technology. It excels in long-range depth sensing even under intense lighting, making it ideal for autonomous tractors and field-based robotic platforms.

Compact size for easy integration into mobile and robotic platforms

All three references are designed for seamless integration into agricultural machinery, drones, and robotic arms, allowing flexibility across various smart farming architectures.
