Nisshinbo NB7123 & NB7130: Precision and Safety for 1-Cell Li-ion Applications

Nisshinbo NB7123 & NB7130: high-precision protection for 1-cell li-ion batteries

As smart devices continue to shrink in size and grow in functionality, battery protection becomes more critical than ever.

At Macnica ATD Europe, we’re pleased to present two new solutions from Nisshinbo Micro Devices that directly address these needs: the NB7123 and NB7130.

These 1-cell Li-ion battery protection ICs are engineered for space-constrained, safety-critical environments—such as hearing aids, fitness trackers, and mobile terminals—where a fault in the power system can impact both the device and the user.

Product Overview: NB7123 and NB7130

The NB7123 and NB7130 are both high-performance protection ICs designed to enhance the safety and reliability of single-cell Li-ion battery systems.

They integrate all standard safety features, including overcharge/over-discharge voltage detection, charge/discharge overcurrent protection, and short circuit detection. These features make them particularly suitable for devices worn on the human body, where reliability and user safety are paramount.

Both ICs offer:

  • Operating Input Voltage: 1.5 V to 5.0 V
  • Operating Temperature Range: -40°C to 105°C
  • Standby function via STB pin, reducing current consumption to 0.04 μA max
  • 0 V Battery Charging Inhibition Voltage: 1.2 V to 2.0 V, Accuracy: ±20 mV

Both ICs are also available in ultra-small WLCSP-8 packages, ideal for integration into today’s most compact electronic designs.

NB7123ZA: High-Side Protection with Integrated Charge Pump

The NB7123ZA stands out with its high-side MOSFET architecture, allowing the protection circuit’s ground to be connected directly to the battery’s negative terminal. This simplifies PCB layout and signal referencing, making it ideal for highly integrated systems.

To address the complexity of high-side switching, the IC includes a dedicated charge pump, eliminating the need for external gate driver components.

NB7130ZA: Low-Side Precision with Ultra-Low Power

The NB7130ZA is optimized for low-side MOSFET control, offering a lower typical current consumption of just 3.0 μA in active mode, making it an excellent fit for low-power and portable designs.

It maintains the same safety features as the NB7123, with added flexibility in short-circuit detection thresholds and over-discharge release types. The architecture is particularly suited for designs requiring cost-effective, accurate, and efficient battery protection.
